DeVEnIR: Defining Vulvovaginal Candidiasis - Elements of Infection and Treatment

Approximately 70% of all women worldwide experience a vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lives. If this infection recurs more than four times a year, it is considered a recurrent infection or Recurrent VulvoVaginal Candidiasis (RVVC; estimated at 5%-10% of all women). Having a vaginal yeast infection is typically accompanied by numerous physical symptoms (e.g., itching, pain, burning, general discomfort), but it also has a significant impact on women's mental well-being. Additionally, this vaginal infection is associated with fertility issues and an increased risk of transmission/acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Objective

To study the microbial community, metabolites, and immune substances in the vagina of both women with a vaginal yeast infection and women without vaginal complaints. Further to investigate whether there are differences in the microbial community between four different study groups:

  • Women who repeatedly suffer from vaginal yeast infections, during a time when they have an active infection.
  • Women who repeatedly suffer from vaginal yeast infections, during a time when they do not have an active infection.
  • Women who have a vaginal yeast infection for the first time (or after a long period).
  • Women who do not suffer from vaginal symptoms.

Additionally, the study will examine how different lifestyles (e.g., diet, personal hygiene) may influence the development of these yeast infections. Furthermore, the effects of sexual intercourse and medication use will also be investigate.

Study progress

Samples will be collected, and access will be requested to the medical history related to any previous vaginal infections. During sample collection, vaginal and anal swabs will be taken.

During the consultation, all women will be asked to complete a short questionnaire (approximately 15 minutes) with specific questions about their vaginal symptoms. Following this, these women will be asked to complete a more detailed questionnaire at home (approximately 45 minutes) concerning habits and lifestyle factors that may be linked to having (recurrent) vaginal yeast infections

Have you ever (or repeatedly) suffered from a vaginal fungal infection? Then we are looking for you!
